Books
In keeping with the forum's theme of providing people with intellectual and intuitive tools for reassessing their perceptions of water, West has authored three books. Universal Water is the most technical and examines water from the perspectives of modern scientific theories and ancient beliefs, whereas Altered Perceptions provides a succinct history of our water "consciousness" and suggests some opportunities for shifting it. Hydromimicry portrays water as a model for approaching today's management and technology challenges. A brief description of the books and the ordering information is provided on this web page.
Universal Water
Universal Water: The Ancient Wisdom and Scientific Theory of Water (Inner Ocean Publishing 2002) was West's first work to target both a technical and nontechnical readership. Universal Water examines water from the perspectives of science, naturalism, and ancient wisdom. In particular, the contention that water serves as a molecular-scale mediator for planetary and universal phenomena is examined in light of philosophies, theories, and insights that have been shared throughout human history. Rather than critiquing these divergent perspectives, the book focuses on presenting them in a manner that confronts our prevailing postmodern beliefs about water. In the process of sampling these interesting (albeit unfamiliar and often controversial) perspectives, the book addresses the mystic as well as the scientific, the conventional as well as the unconventional, and the spiritual as well as the physical. While Universal Water was written for a diverse audience, some familiarity with the concepts and terms used to describe science and Nature is helpful. It is available through Amazon and the author.

Altered Perceptions
Altered Perceptions: Addressing the Real Water Crises (Unlimited Publishing 2006) is based on material from West's recent lectures and articles and on excerpts from Universal Water. The book focuses on prevalent views of water in the industrialized world and their influence on crises surrounding freshwater resources and the oceans. How our collective perceptions have served to create and sustain the current crises is examined in light of institutions, policies, and attempted solutions. Altered Perceptions traces the historical view of water in identifying the major philosophical, spiritual, and cultural shifts that have altered humanity's relationship to it. Rather than suggesting solutions to these crises, the book explores ways in which our predominantly intellectual view of water may be supplemented by intuitional and/or experiential insights; perhaps facilitating a more balanced relationship with water. Altered Perceptions was written for a nontechnical audience and requires no background in water science or history. It is available through Amazon, the publisher, and the order desk at major bookstores.

Hydromimicry
Hydromimicry: Strategies for a Water Planet (Water Sciences & Insights 2009, 2010) explores the micro- and macro-scale roles of water with a focus on supporting or emulating them in our approach to resource and technology challenges. These strategies involve recognizing and working with Earth's responses to human pressures and with water's orchestration of global transformations, as opposed to coercing water to conform to our dictates. The traditional "management" of water has overemphasized its role as a commodity and underemphasized its role in climate change, technology design, energy alternatives, and human health. Water's subtlety in initiating or mediating many of the physical, chemical, and biological processes on Earth can serve as a model for decisions and technologies we employ to address today's challenges....even those challenges that are rarely associated with water. The second edition of Hydromimicry is available in an electronic format ( download here) or as a hard copy ( order here).
