In conjunction with his books and lectures, West recently hosted a weekly radio forum exploring the mysteries and wonders of water. Both the radio program (described below) and its companion e-Book ( click here to preview) are entitled Exploring Water's Essence. He has also appeared as a guest on a variety of radio interview shows focusing on science, the environment, and human perceptions. Excerpts from selected interviews may be heard by following the links at the bottom of this web page.
Exploring Water's Essence
For thirteen weeks during the summer and early autumn of 2006, the 7th Wave Network broadcast an Internet radio program devoted solely to the subject of water. The hour-long talk show, Exploring Water's Essence, addressed diverse aspects of water and humanity's changing relationship to this remarkable substance. Each show begins with an "Orientation" segment, during which West introduces the episode's topic and its relevance to current affairs. The remainder of each show consists of an "Interview" segment, during which West discusses the topic with a guest expert. All thirteen episodes of Exploring Water's Essence are summarized below and may be accessed at any time by clicking on the MP3 icons. Note that it may take several minutes for the audio stream to begin.
Is Water a Gift, Right, or Commodity? As water becomes more expensive and is controlled by progressively fewer entities, debates regarding its ownership, distribution, and management become more heated. The resolutions to such debates, as well as the circumstances leading up to them, are very much a reflection of how we (collectively) perceive water. How do our underlying views of water dictate which solutions are available to us? Show aired on 13 July 2006 with guest Sandra Postel, an expert in water conservation and policy.
Living Water: ancient and indigenous views. The term "living water" is one that has been revived in the postmodern era to describe a number of natural sources and man-made products; however, the roots of this term are very ancient and imply something quite different. Much of this sacred knowledge would have been lost were it not for contemporary indigenous cultures that continue to honor water through both their actions and rituals. Show aired on 20 July 2006 with guest Vernon Masayesva, a water advocate and Hopi tribal leader.
Transforming Water Scarcity into Water Abundance. The issue of scarcity is arguably the most recognizable one surrounding water, particularly in arid regions of the world. Is water really scarce or is there abundant water if we simply choose to make changes in our lifestyles and land use activities? Permaculture, rainwater harvesting, and watershed restoration may soon become commonplace for people living in arid climates. Show aired on 27 July 2006 with guests Ann Phillips and Brad Lancaster, permaculturists and water harvesting designers.
The Water Cycle and Global Climate Change. Whereas the anthropogenic production of carbon dioxide appears to be the major contributor to recent climate shifts, man-made changes to the global water cycle are predicted to surpass those of climate regime in the upcoming decades. Moreover, manipulations of the water cycle often exacerbate climate change, representing a largely overlooked aspect of the global water crisis. Show aired on 3 August 2006 with guest Peter Gleick, a water resources and global climate scientist.
Emerging Water Technologies and Mysteries. Novel technologies that utilize water are almost as common as those that treat water. For example, water can now serve as a quantum computer and an automobile fuel. Additionally, water has long been recognized as a sacred substance that performs numerous, but often unrecognized, roles in our world. Is there a connection between the diverse spiritual and practical uses of water? Show aired on 10 August 2006 with guest Drunvalo Melchizedek, a technology researcher and spiritual teacher.
Water and The Arts: a human experience. We have been listening to and observing water (e.g., waterfalls, rushing streams, ocean breakers) since the beginning of our existence on Earth. Throughout history, artists, musicians, poets, and photographers have provided us with unique ways of perceiving water and the natural world. For many people in today's industrialized societies, the arts provide an important experiential link to water. Show aired on 17 August 2006 with guest David Rothenberg, a nature-oriented musician and composer.
Water's Dynamic Networks: a key to its magic? Perhaps the twentieth century's most startling revelation about water is that its liquid phase consists of vast molecular networks that change connections a trillion times each second. The outer stillness of water masks an ultra-dynamic interior that is responsible for its unique physical properties and, perhaps, for "cognitive" attributes that have been described for other complex networks. Show aired on 24 August 2006 with guests Mark McCoy and Greg Yau, water structure and subtle energy researchers.
Mythic Water: wisdom and the cosmos. Water has been designated as a source of wisdom, a symbol of the Absolute, and a link to the etheric realms throughout human history. It was also revered as one of the four elemental substances comprising the material world. Water is ubiquitous in the cosmos, playing a role in events as diverse as birthing stars, sculpting planets, and transporting the interstellar substances essential for earthly life. Show aired on 31 August 2006 with guest William E. Marks , a water naturalist and historian.
The Oceans: planetary indicator and controller. For decades, scientists debated about which Earthly compartment (land, air, water, etc.) served as the primary controller for climate and other major global processes. There is now agreement that the oceans are at the helm, primarily in response to solar influences. Also, seawater appears to serve as both an indicator and communicator of various planetary and extraplanetary events. Show aired on 7 September 2006 with guest David Helvarg, an ocean activist, writer, and documentary producer.
Water and Biological Life: the essential ingredient? The assumed link between biological life and water is so pervasive that water is often considered a prerequisite for life anywhere in the universe. Is water just a solvent for biochemicals or does it perform less obvious, but quintessential, roles? How do we select a water that is optimal for us, what is the connection between food and water, and how are health problems related to water? Show aired on 14 September 2006 with guest Steve Meyerowitz, an expert in natural foods and drinking water.
Water Crises: time for a different approach? The notion that our present challenges with water may not be meet through technology, regulation, management, or any exclusively intellectual problem-solving tool is one that has gained some support. Could adding an experiential and/or intuitive component to our relationship with water enhance our living sustainably with it? Is there an underlying theme to the water crises we currently face? Show aired on 21 September 2006 with guest Peter Warshall, a water scientist and anthropologist.
Water's Rhythms, Geometries, and Flow Forms. There are a growing number of unconventional water treatment processes that have been specifically engineered to simulate water's natural rhythms and flow forms. Moreover, techniques for studying water's flow forms and micro-scale geometries are being used to assess its quality and history. What underlies these investigation techniques and how are they currently being applied? Show aired on 28 September 2006 with guest Jennifer Greene, a water educator and flowform innovator.
Water and Consciousness: divergent views. The relationship between water and consciousness is one that has been raised by a number of modern naturalists and philosophers. Whereas the roots of this relationship are ancient, its abstract nature continues to support a surprisingly wide range of views. Some people maintain that water mirrors consciousness, while others posit that water's properties provide it with a type of sentience. Show aired on 5 October 2006 with guest Joseph Bender, a water technology consultant and inventor.
